industry experts will speak to the student body about a current events topic. These take place in lieu of Friday programming on a given week. Business professional attire is required for these events. • Statement of Professional Interest- The statement of professional interest is part of the application packet. It is a short (approx. 100 word) encapsulation of your interests and goals you hope to accomplish while here with us in DC. It will be used by your Pre-Arrival Advisor to assist in the internship matching process and will be sent to potential internship sites as part of your packet of materials to help gauge if you will be a good fit for a particular internship. You can find resources for writing a good statement of professional interest here. • Student Portal- The student portal is where you initially apply to TWC and upload all of your documentation. You will also use the student portal to access InternConnect and sign up for your evening course. You can log into your student portal through this link. • Student Services- The student services office is responsible for assisting with any student concerns related to your experience while with TWC. These can be related to accommodations, housing arrangements, or assistance locating resources while living in the city. The student services office is located on the P1 level of the Residential Academic Facility. • Think Tank- Think tanks can be partisan, bi-partisan, or non-partisan and work to do research and provide up to date information about a particular industry or topic. This research is then often cited in academic articles or in legislative contexts. While many think tank interns do support work (for example, communications or operations), many work as research assistants for associates at these offices. Some well known think tanks include the Brookings Institution, the American Enterprise Institute, and the Wilson Center. These positions are highly competitive and often require additional application materials beyond what you submit to TWC. • TWC- Abbreviation for The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars • U-Line- U-Line is our shared working space where your LEAD instructors host their office hours. We also have a career development center here, where you can work with our career development advisor on updating your resume, writing cover letters, or practice interviewing skills. We also have a quiet space for you to conduct phone or video interviews as well as practice resources for upcoming career-oriented tests (GRE, LSAT, GMAT, etc.) • WMATA- The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is responsible for the running of all public transportation in Washington, DC, including the metro and bus lines. This is the primary mode of transportation for most residents of DC and the majority of TWC students. All of our internship site partners are accessible via WMATA public transportation. The metro refers to multi-car trains that run across the city on a given track, while the buses run on street level alongside other personal transportation. Both the metro and buses use the same MetroCard to access, which can be purchased at any Metro station or online. The nearest Metro stop to our Residential Academic Facility is the NoMa/Gallaudet station, which is part of the Red Line. www.twc.edu
