Tips For Being Successful
Here are some best practices staff and other students have used to make the most
of the pre-arrival experience!
www.twc.edu
• Look at TWC's instagram @twcinternships to get a feel for
a variety of student experiences
• Be aware of time zones! Washington D.C. operates in the
Eastern Standard Time (EST) zone
• Check your spam or junk folder, not just your inbox to
ensure you do not miss any opportunities
• Be on the lookout for (202) numbers which is D.C.'s area
code
• Make sure your voicemail is able to receive messages and
has a professional greeting
• D.C. is a networking city, EVERY communication counts,
make it professional!
• Business hours are usually between 9 am-5 pm EST; this
window is the most effective for scheduling interviews and
communicating with site partners
• Review open internship opportunities on Grad Leaders
frequently and apply to those positions that most closely
related to your interests
• Research the organizations you have been referred, reach
out with any feedback
• Do a mock interview, even if you feel confident in your
interviewing skills
• Be open-minded and give every interview request an
opportunity
• Communicate, communicate, communicate!
• Your pre-arrival advisor is here to support you, let
them know anything and everything that is going
on including site outreach, concerns, and questions
about LEAD/evening course/housing/etc!
