The best way to start earning that "golden ticket" is to learn about the process and requirements now. Start preparing during your junior year, maintain high standards of conduct, and be patient with the process. 6-12 Months Before Applying • Clean up social media presence (delete inappropriate content) • Begin reducing or eliminating debt • Stop all illegal drug use immediately • Limit alcohol consumption and avoid incidents • Start tracking addresses, employment, and foreign contacts • Review credit report and dispute errors • Distance yourself from problematic associates • Document any mitigating circumstances for past issues 3-6 Months Before Applying • Create comprehensive SF-86 preparation document (see below) • Inform references they may be contacted • Gather contact information for past employers and landlords • Review passport for international travel dates • Make copies of important documents (birth certificate, transcripts) • Practice explaining any concerns in your background • Ensure all tax obligations are current When You Receive Conditional Offer • Complete SF-86 accurately and thoroughly (see below) • Submit all required documentation • Respond promptly to investigator requests • Prepare for in-person interview with investigator • Prepare for polygraph (if required for position) During the Investigation • Be available for investigator contact • Respond to questions promptly and honestly • Inform references they may be contacted • Don't discuss sensitive details of the investigation • Maintain professionalism in all interactions • Report any changes in circumstances (address, employment, foreign contact) Behaviors That Impact Security Clearances Positive Factors: • Financial responsibility and stable credit • Honesty and integrity • Strong character references
