Budgeting for
Your D.C.
Experience
Costs can vary from year to year, so we've
updated this guide with input from interns about
what they actually spent and where they found
opportunities to save during their time in D.C.
The goal isn't to predict exactly what you'll spend.
Every student's lifestyle is different. Instead, use
these estimates as a starting point for building a
realistic budget before you arrive. A good rule of
thumb: plan for your essentials first, then decide
how much you want to set aside for dining out,
entertainment and exploring the city.
Local
Transportation
$35-55 per week
$140-220 per month
Includes Metrorail, Metrobus and the
occasional rideshare or bikeshare trip.
Saving Tips
• Metrorail fares depend on distance and
when you tap in. Use WMATA's trip planner
to map out your trip and see how much it
will cost.
• Commuting every workday? It may be
worth getting a Monthly Unlimited Pass.
Dining Out/
Entertainment
$70-125 per week
$280-500 per month
Includes restaurant meals, coffee, happy
hours, movies, concerts and events.
Saving Tips
• Pack lunch most workdays and save
dining out for social plans.
• Take advantage of free fun: Smithsonian
museums, the National Gallery of
Art, monuments at night and free
performances around the city.
• Look for happy hour deals and always ask
about student discounts.
