For five decades, TWC has stood at the intersection of education and opportunity, transforming the lives of more than 68,000 students through experiential learning. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we reflect on a legacy built on an unwavering commitment to preparing tomorrow's leaders.
From Humble Beginnings to Global Impact
Our story began in 1975 amidst national political upheaval, when founders William M. Burke and Sheila Ann McRevey established The Washington Center for Learning Alternatives with just 51 students. Their vision to enhance traditional academics with real-world Washington experience has never been more relevant than today.
Decades of Transformation:
- 1970s: TWC launched with Presidential Lecture Series bringing leaders to students
- 1980s: Expanded access through scholarships and leadership seminars
- 1990s: Went global with international programs and state partnerships
- 2000s: Set records with 700+ students for Obama inauguration programming
- 2010s: Opened our Residential & Academic Facility in NOMA, D.C.
- 2020s: Pivoted successfully through pandemic challenges
- 2025+: Preparing for the future of work with innovative new programs
