1 The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars Career Readiness – Friday Development Days Throughout each semester, there will be three Fridays dedicated to building and honing the skills that participants will need to be successful in the workforce and their future careers. Attendance and participation at each development day is required. Each day will have set sessions in the morning, with the afternoon providing the opportunity for students to choose 2 of the offered workshops that most align with their needs and interests. Friday Development Day #1 Session Name Description Type Professional Communication During this session, participants will focus on different aspects and approaches to professional communication. Participants will receive information on communication etiquette and practice applying that knowledge to real-life workplace scenarios. Through interactive exercises, students will build confidence in verbal, nonverbal, and written communication, and gain tools to navigate challenging conversations with professionalism. Required Networking This session will introduce participants to the fundamentals of effective networking, both in- person and online. Participants will learn how to build authentic professional relationships, navigate networking events with confidence, and leverage tools like LinkedIn to expand their networks. Through interactive activities and real-world scenarios, students will practice introducing themselves, asking meaningful questions, and following up to maintain connections. Required Budgeting for Your Semester Participants in this session will learn foundational knowledge of personal financial management. In addition, participants will learn the value of being financially literate and ways to continue developing their skills in this field, while walking away with tangible tips for budgeting appropriately for their semester.
