Pre-Arrival Resume Dos and Don'ts Overall Resume Do... • Keep your resume to one or two full pages. • Format your sections in the following order: – Resume Header with your up-to-date contact information – Education, – Awards and Honors (if applicable to you), – Work Experience, – Other Experience (if applicable to you), – Skills. • Use 10-12 pt. font for the body of your resume (not including your section headers). • Use a font that is professional and easy to read like Times New Roman, Cambria, Arial, or Garamond. • Keep font color easy to read, using dark colors (black is preferred, but some headers in dark blue are acceptable). • Ensure you are using consistent formatting throughout. – If you utilize periods to mark the end bullet point descriptions, make sure that every bullet point description ends with a period. – Do your sections have consistent spacing between other sections? – Are your margins lined up? – Do your font styles and colors match and are they the same size? – Are the bullet points lined up? – Do you format locations and dates consistently? – For example, January 2019–August 2022 is different formatting from 1/2019–August 2022 or Jan. 2019– August 2022 as the months' format do not match. Do Not... • Add photos or headshots. • Include a section with a summary or objective. • Format the resume in two columns to allow for maximum space. • Leave large amounts of empty space, including making the resume just over one page or one and a half pages in length. Contact Information/Resume Header Do... • Ensure your name is the largest item on the page. • List your contact information as your resume header. • Use a frequently used and professional email address, such as your school email address, and include your phone number with the area code. • Include your LinkedIn URL or a digital portfolio for graphic design projects hyperlinked. Do Not... • Use an email address that you do not check frequently or that is inappropriately named. • Add your birthday or marital status. Education Do... • Be sure to list your highest level of education or most recent degree first if you have more than one degree or have transferred from another university, college, or community college. • Include the following information about the educational background for each degree. – Official university name and location (City, State), – Anticipated graduation or graduation date in Month Year format (ex. May 2024), – Degree(s), field(s) of study, or major(s) and minor(s) if applicable, – For example, Bachelor of Arts, History major, Psychology minor. – GPA (if 3.0 or higher) and relevant coursework or course name. • If you participated in a study abroad program, include the following information for each program: – The official program and university name and location (City, Country), – The term(s) participated, – Any relevant coursework. • If listing any relevant coursework, write out the entire course name, like ANT 301: Anthropological Theory. Do Not... • Include your high school degree. • List your university name with an acronym (ex. UC). • Forget to add the degree you are studying towards. • Forget to add other universities, colleges, or community colleges that you may have transferred from.
