• Try to go to a networking event on a day that you are not busy; it will lessen your exhaustion level. • Be intentional; if there is someone you know will be there that you really want to talk to, try to find them early on in the event. • Have a list of questions nearby in case you forget or feel uncomfortable. • Dress to impress; it will make you feel confident and will make a good impression. • Try to go towards the outside of the crowd rather than right in the middle. • Take regular breaks to prevent burnout. • Know your limits. Leave when you feel ready. • Set small goals for yourself to make the event less intimidating. Networking Settings Networking does not happen exclusively at large networking events. Go into an environment where your strengths can shine through, such as: • One-on-one coffee meeting • LinkedIn Messaging • Skype or phone meeting • Small group networking event • Lectures (minimal talking for you, except to the people sitting near you) • The Washington Center Events Gallup Strengths and Networking Achiever: Set a goal to attend a certain number of events or talk to a certain number of people to reach a sense of accomplishment from a networking event. Activator: As an activator, you are not afraid to take action. In fact, you feel that you HAVE to take action. Therefore, you thrive with the ability to both attend networking events and approach people at events. Lean into your urge to approach someone and begin that conversation. Adaptability: Go to a networking event out of your comfort zone or perhaps industry area. Test out your ability to adapt to a new environment with new individuals. With the adaptability strength you thrive in a flexible and ever- changing setting. Analytical: The analytical theme allows you to enjoy complex theories and dilemmas. Prior to networking events, look up current challenges in your field, and think through your take on the challenges. Use those as conversation topics during networking events for your industry. Arranger: The arranger theme allows you to thrive in complex situations with many factors that all require management. To use your strength, go to a conference that requires you to take in a lot of competing factors such as which event to choose, when to approach someone, what is the best use of your time, etc. Belief: The belief strength allows you to be very confident in your values. Make sure your core values related to your career interested are mentioned in your mission statement.
