Through The Washington Center’s Academic Internship Program, Jack Hartung gained hands-on experience at the intersection of public health policy, legislative advocacy and pre-law studies. As an intern with Men’s Health Network, Jack worked directly on Capitol Hill, contributing to bipartisan efforts that advance men’s health awareness and preventive care at the national level.

This opportunity allowed me to strengthen my understanding of how policy priorities are shaped, how legislation is influenced through advocacy, and how effective communication is essential in a legal and governmental setting.”

Skills, Networking, & Career Readiness

In addition to networking with congressional staff during my Capitol Hill visits, I also attended several health-focused outreach events on behalf of the Men’s Health Network. These events allowed me to interact with a wide range of working professionals and develop critical skills, including professional communication, issue advocacy, and strategic networking.

As part of The Washington Center’s Career Readiness Program, I also attended a masterclass led by Dr. Todd Belt at the Graduate School of Political Management at George Washington University, which provided valuable insight into political strategy, messaging, and the practical realities of governance.

Overcoming Concerns & Finding Opportunity

Before applying, I was concerned about finding an internship in Washington, D.C. that aligned with my interest in public health legislation and law. As someone unfamiliar with the professional landscape in D.C., I was unsure how to navigate the internship search process.

Through conversations with my advisors, I learned that TWC has an extensive, long-standing network of professionals who are deeply invested in placing students in valuable internship opportunities. Understanding the strength of this network and the level of support available gave me the confidence to pursue and secure an internship aligned with my academic and professional goals.

Most Memorable Moment

Leaving Capitol Hill one evening, I had the privilege of meeting Congressional Representative Debbie Dingell, whose district I was raised in back home in Michigan, and whose late husband, John Dingell, was instrumental in establishing the scholarship that made my participation in The Washington Center program possible.

I was honored to have a brief one-on-one conversation with Representative Dingell about my academic and professional interests, our shared Michigan roots, and our mutual commitment to health advocacy. This experience reinforced my personal commitment to public service and further strengthened my interest in law and public policy.

Scholarship Impact

Receiving the John Dingell and Ford Motor Company Scholarship was instrumental in making this experience possible. Because my internship was unpaid, the scholarship alleviated financial barriers and allowed me to fully engage in professional, educational, and networking opportunities throughout Washington, D.C.

RAF Community & Advice for Future Students

Living in the Residential and Academic Facility (RAF) was a defining part of my experience, as it allowed me to connect with students from across the country while living in the heart of Washington, D.C. Beyond the strong sense of community, the RAF’s location provided incredible access to the city’s many free museums, public events, and cultural opportunities, making it easy to explore and learn outside of the internship experience.

The RAF also offers excellent access to the Metro, which makes navigating the city convenient and efficient. I strongly encourage future AIP students to familiarize themselves with the Metro system on their first day, as it allows them to fully take advantage of D.C.’s accessibility while balancing internship, academic, and networking commitments.
