For many students, the path from college to a rewarding career feels daunting, especially in fields where hands-on experience and research skills seem like must-haves from day one. But for Isabella, a senior at the University of Maryland Baltimore County majoring in Biology, an internship with the U.S. Department of the Navy’s Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) not only bridged this gap, but it also transformed her perspective, skills, and confidence in ways she never expected.

This summer, Isabella found herself working at the cutting edge of molecular science, diving into challenging projects and building a network that became like family. Her story is a powerful reminder that sometimes the right opportunity isn’t about having all the experience in the world; it’s about having the passion and curiosity to learn.

Here’s how Isabella’s summer at the Naval Research Laboratory reshaped her future and why she believes anyone with a spark of interest should “just go for it!”

Tell us a little about your background and academic interests.

A: I'm a senior at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, studying Biology. What first sparked my interest in biology was seeing how interconnected everything in nature truly is. As I went deeper into my studies, I fell in love with genetics, especially the intricate mechanisms behind gene expression and protein-protein interactions. In the future, I’m hoping to conduct research in genetics.

Where was your internship, and what were some of your responsibilities?

A: I interned at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C., specifically in the Center for Bio/Molecular Science and Engineering. My main responsibilities involved designing experiments, analyzing data, and presenting my findings to my peers. Each day challenged me to apply my academic knowledge in real ways, and that hands-on experience was invaluable.

Tell us about a project you worked on during your internship that stood out.

A: I had the chance to work on coacervates—spontaneously forming droplets with high- and low-density properties that phase-separate on their own. While the concept was new to me and presented some tough learning curves, it was thrilling to tackle something so cutting-edge. I felt incredibly fulfilled knowing my contributions added to this evolving area of research.

This internship has given me a new level of enthusiasm and drive to pursue a career as a research scientist. It not only provided the technical skills I needed but also helped me build the confidence to see myself contributing to the scientific field.

Why did you decide to apply for this internship with us?

A: The biggest appeal was that it was open to students like me curious and driven, but still building our resumes. When I applied, I didn’t have much lab experience outside of my classes, but the application process emphasized curiosity and passion over experience. That made all the difference to me, and I felt encouraged to apply.

What did you value most about your internship experience?

The close-knit, family-like support system we had within our cohort. Being part of a small group allowed me to get to know each of my peers on a personal, academic, and professional level. The network I built there has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.

How has this experience shaped or impacted your career goals?

A: This internship has given me a new level of enthusiasm and drive to pursue a career as a research scientist. It not only provided the technical skills I needed but also helped me build the confidence to see myself contributing to the scientific field.

What advice would you give to other students considering an internship with TWC?

A: If you’re not sure you’re ‘qualified enough,’ don’t let that hold you back just go for it! This internship is an incredible opportunity to work with professionals who are actively engaged in your field, and it prioritizes learning and growth over experience. It can truly be a life-changing opportunity.
