What’s it like to work at the heart of American democracy? For Álvaro Sopo Salazar, an intern in the Office of Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar (FL-27), the answer blends fast-paced problem-solving, meaningful constituent engagement and a front-row seat to how public policy shapes everyday lives.
In this spotlight, Álvaro shares how he turned challenges into opportunities, from designing systems to track community concerns to deepening his understanding of U.S. foreign affairs. He reflects on the lessons learned, the impact made and why effective government starts with listening.
Skills Gained & Networking Opportunities
Through my internship, I developed several essential professional skills. I learned how to conduct time-sensitive research and present it clearly and concisely. I also gained insight into how the media team operates within a congressional office, contributed to legislative correspondence and supported office operations.
Washington, D.C. provided many valuable networking opportunities. I attended events such as a reception hosted by The Hill, a Young America’s Foundation gathering and lectures organized by the Latin America Policy Association (LAPA) at Georgetown University. One of the most memorable events was a briefing at the Embassy of Colombia, where I learned about the armed conflict in the region and connected with students and professionals interested in Latin America and international affairs.
Overcoming Concerns
My primary concern before applying to the program was its financial cost. I am grateful to TWC and the State of Florida for awarding me a partial scholarship, which allowed me to participate in the program. Additionally, the idea of working in a Congressional office initially felt intimidating. However, with the guidance of the staff and a willingness to learn and serve, I successfully adapted and gained meaningful insight into the inner workings of the American government.
Most Exciting Experience
The highlight of my internship was participating in a Capitol Dome Tour with my office. As access to this tour is limited, it was a unique and privileged opportunity. Seeing The Apotheosis of Washington fresco up close and standing atop the Capitol Dome with a panoramic view of the National Mall and Washington D.C. was an unforgettable experience shared with fellow interns.
Favorite Spots in D.C.
Some of my favorite restaurants in D.C. include Ben’s Chili Bowl and Tally Thai. I also recommend La Cosecha on Thursday nights every other week when they host Salsa Nights—a lively and fun experience in Union Market.
Impact of Scholarship Support
The scholarship I received helped cover the program and housing fees, which allowed my stipend to support daily living expenses. This financial support was critical in enabling me to focus on my internship and academic responsibilities during my final undergraduate semester.
Final Reflections
I highly recommend the Academic Internship Program (AIP) internship experience, especially for those interested in Capitol Hill. It offers an exceptional opportunity to understand how the U.S. government functions and how congressional offices operate behind the scenes. You'll join a dynamic team dedicated to serving constituents and advancing legislative goals. Beyond the office, D.C. offers a rich array of free events, monuments, museums and public lectures that enhance both professional and personal growth.
