Washington, D.C., is one of the best cities for students and interns, offering world-class internships, networking opportunities and endless free activities.

But let’s be real: D.C. can be expensive.

Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! After surveying recent participants in our Academic Internship Program, we compiled the top budget hacks to help you live affordably (and still have fun) in the nation’s capital.

1. Master Public Transportation

D.C.’s Metro and bus system is efficient—if you know how to use it.

  • Get a SmarTrip card – Pre-load money to save and download the app to your iPhone or Android.
  • Capital Bikeshare – Free rides under 30 minutes with many pickups and drop off locations throughout the city (use code STUDENTDC for extra savings).
  • Scooter promos – Often available, especially when new models (like Hopp) hit the streets. Plus, check for first-ride discounts.

Pro Tip: Avoid surge pricing during rush hour or bad weather - walk or bike instead!

2. Eat Well for Less: Student Meal Hacks

Dining out adds up fast, but these tricks keep costs low:

  • Trader Joe’s – Great for cheaper groceries and don’t forget to sign up for the store saver card for even more discounts.
  • Too Good to Go App – $5 surprise bags from cafes and bakeries.
  • Eastern Market Bargains – Score end-of-day deals on fresh food.

Bonus: Host potlucks with roommates – cheaper (and more fun) than eating out!

3. Free & Cheap Things to Do in D.C.

Why spend money when D.C. has so much free entertainment

  • Smithsonian Museums – All free.
  • Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage – Free daily concerts.
  • Monument walks at night – Stunning and free.

Insider Pick: Blagden Alley (always changing street art, perfect for Instagram!).

4. Free Outdoor Adventures

D.C. has amazing (and free!) nature escapes:

  • Kayak the Potomac – Free on select days.
  • Rock Creek Park – Hiking and biking trails.
  • Tidal Basin Picnics – Best with cherry blossoms.

Car Free Paradise: Beach Drive, which runs through the middle of Rock Creek Park is closed to cars year round from Broad Branch Road NW to Joyce Road NW.

5. Fitness & Wellness on a Budget

Gym memberships are overrated; instead try:

  • Free outdoor yoga – Dupont Circle on Saturdays.
  • The RAF’s free gym – For residents only.
  • Hiking and biking – Rock Creek Park nearby.

Bonus tip: Plenty of work out and yoga studios offer a free first class.

6. Student Discounts You Didn’t Know About

Take advantage of the many student discounts available throughout the city:

  • UNiDAYS & Student Beans – Tech, fashion and food deals.
  • AMC Theaters $5 Tuesdays – Perfect for movie nights.
  • Split subscriptions with roommates – Like Netflix.
  • Track your spending – Using tools/apps like Mint or YNAB.

Bonus Tip: Flash your ID for discounts at museums, theatres and shops.

Washington, D.C. doesn’t have to be expensive! With these budget hacks, you can enjoy most everything D.C. offers, without draining your bank account.
