Student Garners Professional Insight to Pursue Career in Foreign Service

University of Colorado Boulder student Luke Hahn interned at a national security think tank as part of the CU in D.C. program. In addition to working alongside industry professionals, Luke built a strong network in preparation for a career in foreign service.

Where are you interning and what are some of your responsibilities there?

I interned for a national security think tank and was responsible for assisting the business marketing and development team. I was responsible for performing background research on prospective donors and helping organize and create itineraries for various programs and events.

How have you expanded your professional network during your time in D.C.?

I was able to expand my professional network by working alongside professionals in the nonprofit fundraising industry, as well as analysts to pursue my interest in conducting research in regions of interest. Working alongside both fields of industry gave me professional insight into the world of think tanks and the intelligence community.

How has this experience impacted your career goals?

Working for a national security think tank has inspired me to pursue a career in foreign service in hopes of becoming a specialist one day. I wish to better understand world politics so that I may be able to assist the U.S. Department of State, and contribute both academically and politically to organizations in Washington, D.C.

Whether it is a trip to a historical landmark, or simply coworkers inviting you out after work to network, half of the importance of the D.C. experience is just showing up and putting yourself out there.

What advice do you have for students considering a D.C. experience?

Always say yes to new opportunities and events! Whether it is a trip to a historical landmark, or simply coworkers inviting you out after work to network, half of the importance of the D.C. experience is just showing up and putting yourself out there. Doing so will guarantee feeling fulfilled with your experience.

What was your proudest accomplishment during your D.C. experience?

My proudest accomplishment was expanding my professional network by making new friends both at my internship and at The Washington Center's Residential and Academic Facility. I made several new friendships which I hope will be lifelong relationships, and hope to meet again one day back in Washington, D.C.
