Washington (September 19, 2023) – The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars (TWC) is pleased to announce the successful completion of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) 2023 Summer Transportation Internship Program for Diverse Groups (STIPDG) by 85 undergraduate, graduate and law students from diverse backgrounds across the United States.

Summer Transportation Internship Program for Diverse Groups (STIPDG) field trip at the Virginia Railway Express (VRE)

The STIPDG internship program is a unique opportunity for students to get hands-on experience in public service while learning about policy and innovation in the U.S. transportation sector. The program is fundamental to supporting the USDOT's staff recruitment efforts. Alumni of the program are employed not only across USDOT Operating Administrations and offices around the country, but also throughout state and local departments of transportation, the private sector, nonprofits, academia and other federal agencies.

STIPDG internships are rigorous and project-based, and include a substantive stipend, mentorship from federal staff, professional development programming, and paid housing and travel for students who do not reside near their assigned internship site. Within USDOT, STIPDG is administered by the Federal Highway Administration, but interns are placed in multiple DOT Operating Administrations or “modes.” Internship placement locations include DOT headquarters in Washington, D.C.; the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center in McLean, VA; the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center in Cambridge, MA; and other DOT offices around the country. The internships are open to students in all academic areas and can include technical, research, communications and administrative projects.

This internship opportunity is open each year for eligible students and is a great way to chart a career in public policy. For eligibility information, benefits, application deadlines and program dates, please visit the program page.
