For Sabrina, The Washington Center’s (TWC) Capitol Immersion Program wasn't just an educational experience; it was a revelation. As a senior studying political science and German language at Florida Atlantic University, she came to Washington seeking clarity about her future. What she found was something more valuable: possibility.

"The most rewarding element of Capitol Immersion was hearing directly from leaders in various career fields related to political science," Sabrina reflects. "The opportunity to ask these professionals questions about their daily responsibilities and about how they got to where they are was invaluable."

That direct access transformed abstract career concepts into tangible realities. Sitting across professionals who've built successful careers in political journalism, healthcare lobbying, and policy work, Sabrina could finally picture herself in those roles. "This aspect really helped me picture myself in various career paths and opened my mind to new possibilities of how to leverage my education in political science post-grad."

Reframing What's Possible

"Hearing directly from top professionals in my desired field broadened my idea of a pathway to a successful and fulfilling career," she explains. "As a result, I will pursue many more avenues than originally planned."

Two areas in particular shifted from peripheral interests to genuine possibilities: "This includes becoming excited about the idea of working in political journalism and reframing my perceptions of a career in lobbying."

That reframing is particularly significant. Lobbying is often misunderstood or dismissed by students passionate about public service. But when Sabrina heard John Greene and Noah Block, both working in healthcare lobbying, she recognized advocacy in action. "I am particularly interested in the topic of affordable and public healthcare," she notes. "Hearing from them made me reconsider the avenues through which I can make an impact in the space in my own future career."

The Power of Peer Networks

Beyond the professional connections, Sabrina valued something equally important: her fellow participants. "The program was a fantastic networking opportunity, both through the guest speakers and through the ambitious peers in attendance."

In Washington, ambition recognizes ambition. The students who choose to spend their time in immersive programs like this aren't just padding résumés—they're genuinely curious, driven, and eager to make an impact. Those are the kinds of connections that last long after the program ends.

Her Advice to Future Participants

Would Sabrina recommend Capitol Immersion to others? Absolutely. "I would highly recommend the Capitol Immersion program to my peers, particularly those interested in expanding their knowledge of career path opportunities in the political science space."

Her endorsement speaks to what makes experiential education transformative: it doesn't just teach you what's out there; it shows you where you fit in.
