This summer, Grant A Bane, a Public Relations major from the University of Colorado-Boulder, interned with Scenic America, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the nation's scenic beauty. Grant’s AIP experience not only allowed him to apply his PR expertise in a professional setting but also reinforced his ambition to pursue a career in corporate law.
Where did you intern and what were some of your responsibilities there?
I worked at Scenic America, a nonprofit organization that focuses on maintaining our country's scenic beauty through activities like undergrounding utilities, highway beautification, billboard regulation, etc. I worked as a communications and development intern monitoring and managing the company's social media presence. I was also given the opportunity to write several articles which were published on the organization's website.
What were some experiences in your internship that you found rewarding?
My favorite project from this summer was doing outreach to influencers and creators for potential collaborations on Scenic America's annual photo contest. As a communications major, it was great to be able to apply my knowledge and skills in a real-world context. Additionally, I have always been interested in how influencer and social media partnerships work behind the scenes. I truly enjoyed navigating the opportunities and challenges of this project.
How have you expanded your professional network during your time with TWC?
I've been able to expand my network at events hosted or promoted by TWC and was able to connect with an alumnus of my school, who introduced me to a number of professionals in the D.C. area who work in Mergers and Acquisitions Law or with M&A attorneys. I also formed connections with other interns from the program and intend to stay in contact with them for many years to come.
How has this experience impacted your career goals?
My experience in D.C. over the summer has confirmed my career goals to attend law school and subsequently pursue corporate law. Being surrounded by likeminded individuals who are career driven and dedicated to achieving success at TWC has helped me to stay focused and motivated to reach my full potential.
What advice do you have for international students considering an internship with TWC?
My advice to them is to GO FOR IT! Be sure to work hard, but don't miss out of any of the great opportunities our nation's capital has to offer. Meet new people, explore the city, visit monuments and be a "yes man" when it comes to any new opportunities or potential adventures.
