Through The Washington Center’s Academic Internship Program, Jessica Enriquez Vargas interned at the Law Offices of Karp, Norwind, Gold, & Karp in Alexandria, Virginia, where she supported the firm’s legal team on a variety of active client files. In her role, she helped accelerate settlement negotiations and deepened her understanding of the legal system through hands-on work in legal assistance and case preparation.
Some of the specific skills I’ve developed include case analysis and interpretation, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and attention to detail.”

Beyond her internship, Jess also took advantage of the networking opportunities available. One event that stood out was the #NAUNearYou DC Networking Mixer, held during her first week on the ground in Washington. The event brought together Northern Arizona University alumni from across the D.C. area—offering Jess a unique opportunity to connect with professionals who share her educational background. “Having a simple similarity in common—like attending the same undergraduate school—can help establish a bond or connection more easily with others.”
What were things that you were concerned about when applying for the program?

Some things that I was concerned about when applying for the program included whether graduating seniors would be eligible to apply, the kind of internship site I would land in D.C. a new unfamiliar life on the East Coast, and of course funding for this experience. To overcome these concerns, I reached out to the NAU career development center and got my most pressing question answered, regarding eligibility to apply. I then applied and waited to hear back from my school where I applied first.
My advice to others is to take things one step at a time and be patient. The process will play itself out if you break things down into smaller components and make an effort to receive many kinds of support from others. Do not feel like you have to figure it all out on your own. I recommend reaching out to others who are familiar or affiliated with the program because these valuable conversations will help you decide on the best financial decisions for yourself.
What was your most exciting experience while at TWC?
My most exciting experience had to be exploring the city in my down time. Both the DMV area and the friends I made along the way will forever hold a special place in my heart and mind. I am confident you will make memories for a lifetime interning through TWC.
If you received a scholarship, how did it exactly help you with the opportunity.
NAU generously helped fund this program for me and several other students from our home university. Without this scholarship provided, I am not sure if I would’ve been able to enjoy my experience to the fullest while worrying about financial burdens. This assistance along with a little bit of budgeting for living expenses from our end, made this opportunity possible.
