Shaping the Future of Healthcare

The myriad of challenges in the American healthcare system, including access, affordability and the complex policies surrounding them, fuel a need for agile and informed leaders that is greater than ever before. New federal policies, such as the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Commission, aim to tackle chronic diseases and improve access, yet changing budget demands and other policies at the federal, state and local level raise critical questions about the future of healthcare.

How will these changes impact patients, providers and policymakers? What role can the next generation play in shaping a more equitable healthcare system?

This September, The Washington Center invites students to explore these pressing questions at our second annual Health Policy Immersion Program (September 18-21, 2025). This dynamic, short-term program is designed to accelerate student interest in health policy and inspire early-career engagement across government, advocacy, research and the private sector.

Why Health Policy Matters

From skyrocketing prescription drug prices to mental health crises among Gen Z, today’s healthcare challenges demand fresh perspectives and bold solutions. Consider these key issues:

  • The MAHA Policy Platform: What will proposed reforms mean for public health funding?
  • Healthcare Payment Reform: Why does the U.S. spend more on healthcare than any other nation, yet still struggle with access?
  • Federal Research Funding Cuts: How will reductions in medical research impact long-term public health?
  • Gen Z & Mental Health: A new UNICEF report reveals that 6 in 10 Gen Z individuals feel overwhelmed and anxious by global events, yet 1 in 3 want to lead mental health advocacy. How can policy better support this generation?
