At The Washington Center (TWC), we are inspired by those who channel their passion into tangible action. Meera Varma, a dedicated activist and TED Talk speaker with a Master of Public Health (MPH) and Master of Social Welfare (MSW) from UCLA, is a powerful example.
With a deep commitment to reducing suicide rates and addressing the youth mental health crisis, Meera has already worked alongside national leaders like Oprah Winfrey, President Joe Biden and U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy to make a difference in health policy.
We spoke with Meera about her experience in our Health Policy Immersion Program and how it reinforced her mission to be a voice of hope for those navigating their struggles in silence.
Finding Inspiration in Nonlinear Paths
For Meera, the most rewarding part of the program was discovering the diverse and personal career trajectories of the speakers.
“It was incredibly eye-opening to learn about the unique career paths of each speaker and the diverse ways in which they’ve shaped the field,” she shared. “Their stories reinforced the idea that every path in policy is personal and nonlinear, and that’s something I find truly inspiring.”
Embracing the Unknown in a Professional Journey
The program provided a valuable perspective on career development, encouraging flexibility and openness to new opportunities.
“The program taught me to embrace the unknown and to say ‘yes’ to unexpected opportunities. By stepping out of my comfort zone, I can continue to develop the skills necessary to make meaningful contributions to health policy.”
A Resonant Moment: The Mental Health and Advocacy Panel
As an advocate with over a decade of experience, one panel held particular significance for Meera.
“The Mental Health and Advocacy Panel was particularly impactful. Hearing from individuals doing the critical, grassroots work needed to drive real change motivated me to continue my passion for policy change. The panelists' stories deeply resonated with me and reinforced my commitment.”
A Recommendation for Future Participants
Meera would recommend the program to those looking to understand the landscape of health policy, with a thoughtful note on its structure.
“I would recommend this program to anyone interested in public health or health policy, but with the understanding that it’s primarily a listening experience. The program provides invaluable insights and offers the chance to hear directly from leaders in the field. The exposure to different perspectives is worth it for anyone looking to deepen their understanding.”
