Meet Aubrey Collier, a senior at Stockton University studying Political Science and International Affairs. Like many college seniors, Aubrey wondered how her degree would translate into a career until a week in Washington, D.C. showed her that the possibilities are far wider than she imagined. From unexpected encounters with her congressman to discovering career paths, she never knew existed, Aubrey's Inside Washington experience proved that sometimes the best opportunities come from simply putting yourself out there.

What drew you to apply for the Inside Washington program?

At Stockton University, I'm studying Political Science and International Affairs, and when I heard about this program, I was eager to gain hands-on experience and connections. Inside Washington seemed like the perfect way to apply the knowledge I've been learning in the classroom to the real world.

How did this experience complement what you've been learning in your courses?

Throughout the program, I heard from many experts, but the foreign policy speakers in particular expanded the knowledge I've learned at Stockton. Not only did I hear from experts in my intended field, but I was even able to visit the Stimson Center, a think tank that advises the UN and specializes in international affairs.

Which site visit, speaker, or panel left the biggest impression on you?

After our site visit at the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream, a few people from my group and I went to the House office buildings and spoke with interns and staffers. While we were talking with the staff of New Jersey Congressman Josh Gottheimer, the Congressman himself actually walked out of his office during a meeting and spoke with us. Being from New Jersey and studying political science, it was surreal to see one of my representatives just walk out like that and take the time to talk with us.

Was there a moment during the program where something you learned suddenly "clicked"?

As a senior majoring in Political Science and International Affairs, it can often feel overwhelming thinking about careers and what to do after graduation. But this program showed me there are so many different career paths available, and you don't need to focus solely on what your degree is in. As long as you have the right skills, you can work almost anywhere.

What skills or insights do you feel you've gained that will help you in your future career?

This week taught me how to put myself out there and communicate with people I've never met before. The program developed my public speaking skills and taught me how to speak and act professionally—skills that will definitely carry through into whatever career I pursue.

What's been your favorite moment or memory from the program?

My favorite part has been the people I met and the experiences that came from those connections. I met students from my own school I'd never crossed paths with before, as well as students from all over the country. It was incredible to connect with other people my age who share the same interests and passion for politics and policy.

What would you tell other students who are considering applying to Inside Washington?

You will not regret it! If you have the opportunity to participate in Inside Washington, take it. You'll make valuable connections with professors, peers, and professionals working in D.C. that will help with your future career. You'll also make new friends and have an unforgettable time. And don't forget to bring copies of your resume and business cards!

I'd also like to thank Stockton University for allowing me to attend this program and Dr. Lauren Balasco for making me aware of this opportunity!
