For Luisa Aranda, the Inside Washington program represented the perfect opportunity to bridge classroom learning with real-world practice. After hearing enthusiastic testimonials from University of Arizona peers who had participated in previous seminars, she was eager to experience it herself. What she discovered went beyond expectations: a chance to see her political science coursework transform from abstract theory into tangible conversations with policymakers and legislative staff.
Tell us about a favorite site visit or discussion?
Going to Capitol Hill and getting to tour both chambers of Congress alongside legislative staff. We got to sit at the Senate Chamber, which was super impressive to see in person and compare it to what you see on TV on the news. This opened my eyes to the reality of politics and all the people that work behind the scenes.
A moment during the seminar that felt like it really clicked?
A moment where a lot of things clicked was during the Immigration Reform panel with David Bier. Something he mentioned that stuck with me was that in order for the immigration system to function at its full capacity, people need to shift gears and focus on "how to let people come" rather than focusing on "how to get people out." I’ve gained an important and new perspective on immigration and its enforcement.
What are some skills you feel you were able to develop or polish at Inside Washington?
Critical thinking, to question and fact check everything, and to consume different forms of media on all political spectrums.

Favorite memory from Inside Washington?
Being able to network with my peers and meet so many different types of talented students from all across the country! My University of Arizona group got paired up with the University of San Diego and it was wonderful getting to know them, as well as Dr. Evan Crawford our faculty lead, while touring the city together.
Advice for those students who are considering a program or seminar at TWC?
Even if you think you are not interested in politics, you should apply! TWC covers topics across all disciplines and current events. Step out of your comfort zone and arrive with an open mind.
