National security isn’t just debated in textbooks, it’s forged in the halls of the Pentagon, the Situation Room, and other Washington, D.C. institutions. This year’s program participants didn’t just study those spaces; they stepped into them, learning from the analysts, generals, and policymakers who tackle threats daily. Whether dissecting counterterrorism tactics or exploring careers in defense tech, each attendee left with a sharper vision of their role in safeguarding the future. Today Jessica Wood shares her experience.

What were the most rewarding elements of the National Security program?

One of the most rewarding elements was being surrounded by like-minded peers who were just as passionate about the intersections of policy, intelligence and global affairs as I am. The program had a great mix of expert led sessions and site visits which made it feel like so much more than just a seminar. Most importantly, attending this program solidified that this is the career path I want to pursue. It confirmed my passion for national security and left me feeling more motivated about my future career.

How will you apply this experience into the next steps of your professional career?

I am now aware of so many careers and opportunities within the national security field that I didn’t know existed before. This experience gave me valuable insights that I will carry with me throughout my career. I also plan to take full advantage of the connections I made, and the site visits I participated in by applying for internships both back home and in Washington, D.C. This program truly expanded my perspective and opened up new possibilities.

Would you recommend this program to others?

Absolutely! Honestly, I was a little nervous going into the program. I didn’t know what to expect or if I would make any friends, but I ended up meeting some of the most amazing people. We clicked instantly and formed friendships that I know will last well beyond the program. We’re already planning the next time we will see each other! The professional growth was incredible, but the personal connections made it truly unforgettable.

What about a standout moment from the program?

My site visit to the Secret Service was a major highlight. I always thought of the secret service in terms of presidential protection, but I had no idea how many other career paths exist within the agency. Specifically, I learned about the roles in intelligence inside of the Secret Service which is something I am now interested in. I also felt that the presentation they gave us as a whole was very engaging and informative. Overall, I had the best time at The Washington Center and I am so glad I decided to do something outside of my comfort zone.
