What Is a REAL ID, and Why Do You Need One for Your TWC Experience?

U.S. Federal Government guidance on REAL ID for domestic travel

If you're a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident flying to Washington, D.C. or planning to visit federal sites as part of your TWC program, there’s a critical item you must have: a REAL ID (or acceptable alternative).

What Is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a federally compliant version of a driver’s license or state-issued ID card. They are issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or similar agency in the state or territory in which you reside, just as you would obtain a driver's license or other government ID. You’ll know you have one if your ID features a star in the upper right-hand corner.

It was created to enhance security after 9/11 and is now required for certain federal purposes, though each state has its own specific requirements regarding who can obtain a REAL ID.

Why You Need One

As of May 7, 2025, a REAL ID (or an acceptable alternative, like a passport) is required to:

  • Board a domestic flight within the U.S.
  • Enter federal buildings – including many of the agencies we visit during your TWC experience
  • Access military bases and other secure facilities

That means your standard driver’s license may no longer be enough. And for TWC participants, that could mean missing out on key site visits and learning opportunities.

How to Check If You Have a REAL ID

Flip your driver’s license or state ID over – or just look in the top-right corner. If you see a star, you're good to go. If you don’t, it’s time to act.

Still not sure? Use this FAQ list from DHS to double-check.

Who is Eligible for a REAL ID

U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents – such as green card holders, asylum seekers and refugees – are typically eligible for a REAL ID. For individuals residing in the U.S. on a J, M, F or other visa type, eligibility does vary by state of residency. It is important to check with the DMV in the state you reside to confirm whether you are eligible for a REAL ID.

What If You Don’t Have One?

Don’t panic – but do act quickly. If you're traveling to D.C. or participating in a TWC program this year, and you do not have a REAL ID (or a passport or other TSA-approved ID), you should start the application process as soon as possible as processing times can vary, and you may need to visit a DMV in person.
